Sheats Family

The Sheats or Sheets family originated in Georgia with the marriage of Benjamin and Hattie Sheats. Some spell it Sheats while others spell it Sheets. After the birth of their daughter Annie, the family moved from Marietta, Georgia to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma along with Hattie’s family.  The Canty’s were known as a very large family and they took up residence on 1st Street in Oklahoma City. After the Sheats children,  Ben, Adella and James, completed school,  the family moved to Chicago, Illinois for better employment and the ability to further their education. They migrated to the South Side of Chicago in the neighborhood of 4842 South Evans Avenue.  Ben fondly called :Ben Devils” worked as a janitor while Hattie remained at home to care for the children, take in laundry and managed the household.  Hattie died in 1957 from heart complications while Ben remained to see his great grandchildren into the 1970’s.
